Both Lois Healey, SUSD Director of Special Education, and Lisa Meyerson Marshal, SEPACS VP of Strategic Partnerships, have asked me to forward this time-critical information on to you:

Hello parents and special needs kids advocates, *We are continuing to take registrations for the special needs camp*.

Our deadline was Friday but enrollment is low and we have some weeks in danger of being canceled, including our 1st week of June 9th. We need your help and support to make this pilot program successful.

I attended a planning meeting today with Veronica, our camp director, and Scott, our special education teacher and they are awesome. This is going to be such a fabulous camp, but we need your help to participate and spread the word.

If you are not registering for this camp because of cost, please contact Steve Lee at 480-824-7200 for information about partial scholarships available. We do not want finance issues to be a barrier for families that can benefit from this experience.

We are also opening this camp experience to regular education kids. So if you have siblings or friends ages 6-12 years that would like to join in, there is a discount available for them. This provides a wonderful mainstream integration experience for all kids, promotes understanding and provides leadership opportunities as well. We will have more information regarding this at the parent meeting tomorrow night.

If you are at all interested in this unique opportunity for your kids, please come to the *Parent meeting tomorrow night, Tuesday June 3rd, at 6:30pm at Scottsdale Bible Church* to meet our staff, see the wonderful facilities, and find out more!

Please let me know if you have any questions – julia.whitt@cox.net.

Thanks!

Upcoming Special Olympics Events

by Dru Bloomfield on January 30, 2008

The following announcement is courtesy of Neal Hallihan at the City of Scottsdale’s Adapted Recreation Program.

Attached are two new opportunities for Special Olympics Arizona families and friends to support Special Olympics Arizona! We are working to continually provide exciting opportunities for the athletes and their families and friends, so please pass this information along to anyone who may be interested in participating.

  1. Special Olympics Arizona night with the Phoenix Coyotes, Glendale, AZ
The Phoenix Coyotes are hosting a Special Olympics night on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 as they take on the Calgary Flames. They are offering discounted tickets for Special Olympics Arizona families, friends, volunteers and fans. The attached order form can be filled out and mailed, emailed or faxed to Steve at the Coyotes (contact information on the form). I know many of you enjoyed the Phoenix Mercury games offered at discounted prices last year, and the Phoenix Coyotes are hoping you will take advantage of this opportunity as well. You may forward the order form on to any sports fans who may be interested in this offer, even if they have not been introduced to Special Olympics before. Special Olympics Arizona will have a Community Corner booth set up on game night and will be recognized on the big screen during the game. Come out and cheer on the Coyotes and show your support for Special Olympics!
  2. Arcade Mania at Golfland, Mesa, AZ
I am sure you’ve all heard of the upcoming Polar Plunge on February 16, 2008 at Sunsplash/Golfland in Mesa. Leading up to the big event, Golfland would like to extend an offer for Arcade Mania! For only $8.00, you can participate in unlimited video games on Saturdays, from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Just bring in the attached Arcade Mania flyer and take advantage of this offer! $1.00 from every flyer brought in will be donated back to Special Olympics Arizona. This offer is extended to anyone who may be interested, regardless of whether or not they have been introduced to Special Olympics in the past. If you’re looking for a unique and fun weekend activity, gather up your family and friends and come out to Arcade Mania for an afternoon of video games…all while supporting Special Olympics!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
